How Many Letters Are in the Amharic Alphabet? A Clear Answer for Parents

2026-10-14 · Fidel Friends

How many letters are in the Amharic alphabet? The short answer: most Amharic charts teach 33 or 34 base letters (letter families), and each one has 7 forms, one for each vowel sound. That gives roughly 231 to 238 basic characters, plus a set of extra "wa" forms and a few rarer characters. Fidel Friends teaches 34 letter families. The rest of this post explains why you'll see different numbers in different places, and why that's nothing to worry about.

How many letters are in the Amharic alphabet? The quick answer

So when someone says "the Amharic alphabet has over 200 letters", they're counting every individual character. When a teacher says "33 letters", they're counting families. Both are describing the same system.

Why is the Amharic alphabet counted in families?

The fidel (ፊደል) is an abugida. Each character is a consonant joined with a vowel, and the seven forms of one consonant are drawn as variations of the same base shape: ሀ ሁ ሂ ሃ ሄ ህ ሆ. Children learn the base shape and the seven-vowel pattern, not 231 unrelated pictures. That's why counting families makes the most sense for learning. You can see the layout in our guide to the Amharic alphabet chart.

Why do different charts give different numbers?

There isn't one single official count that every chart follows. Charts differ for a few understandable reasons.

1. Letters borrowed for new sounds

The family ቨ (ve) exists for the "v" sound in borrowed words and names. Some traditional charts leave it out, giving 33 families. Others include it, giving 34. Fidel Friends includes it, so our chart has 34 families.

2. The extra vowel letter ኧ

Some charts add ኧ, an extra vowel character, at the end of the vowel row or as its own small entry. It is used much less often, and many children's charts don't count it as a separate family.

3. "Sound twins"

Amharic inherited its letters from Ge'ez (ግዕዝ), the classical language of Ethiopia. Some letters that once stood for different sounds now sound the same in everyday Amharic. These look-alike sounds are still kept, mainly for traditional spelling:

SoundLetters that share it
hሀ ሐ ኀ
sሰ ሠ
a (glottal)አ ዐ
ts'ጸ ፀ

Most charts keep all of these, which is part of why the count is higher than the number of distinct sounds. A few simplified learning materials group them together. We teach them as separate families and call them "sound twins": different shapes, same sound. Kids find them fun, a bit like spotting twins in a photo.

4. Extra and rarer characters

Beyond the main grid, the full Ethiopic script includes labialized forms (the "wa" series like ሏ ሟ ቧ and the special forms ቋ ኳ ጓ ኋ), plus some characters used mainly in Ge'ez texts or other languages written in the fidel. Big reference charts may show all of these. Kids' charts usually don't, and that's the right call for beginners.

So what number should I tell my child?

For a young child, keep it simple: "There are 34 letter families, and each family has 7 sounds." That's what our letter pages and videos follow, one family at a time. When your child is older and meets a chart with 33 rows, you can explain that some charts leave out ቨ. Nothing they learned is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is it 33 or 34 letters?

Both are common. 33 is a traditional count; 34 usually adds ቨ for the "v" sound. Fidel Friends uses 34.

Does Amharic really have over 200 characters?

Yes, if you count every form. But because each family follows the same seven-vowel pattern, learning feels much closer to "34 shapes plus 7 patterns" than to memorising 230 separate symbols.

Do kids need to learn the "wa" forms right away?

No. Characters like ቋ and ኳ appear in real words, so children will meet them eventually, but they're best introduced once the main 34 families feel comfortable.

Why keep sound twins if they sound the same?

They're part of how many words are traditionally spelled, and they connect Amharic to its Ge'ez roots. For early learners, recognising them is enough. Correct spelling comes later with reading practice.

Is the Amharic alphabet the same as the Ge'ez or Tigrinya alphabet?

They share the same script with some differences. We explain it in Amharic vs Ge'ez vs Tigrinya fidel.
