Amharic vs Ge'ez vs Tigrinya: Is the Fidel the Same?

2026-10-14 · Fidel Friends

Parents often ask us: "Is the Amharic alphabet the same as Ge'ez? And can my child use it for Tigrinya too?" It's a great question, especially for families with roots in both Ethiopia and Eritrea. This guide to Amharic vs Ge'ez vs Tigrinya fidel explains, in plain language, how one writing system is shared by several languages, and where the differences are.

Amharic vs Ge'ez vs Tigrinya: the short version

So yes, a child who learns the Amharic fidel can recognise most Tigrinya letters, but reading Tigrinya also means learning Tigrinya words, sounds and spellings.

What is Ge'ez?

Ge'ez is an ancient Semitic language of the Horn of Africa, associated with the kingdom of Aksum. It is no longer anyone's everyday home language, but it lives on as the liturgical language of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo churches and some other communities. Many diaspora children hear Ge'ez in church prayers and hymns, even if they don't understand every word.

A helpful comparison for parents: Ge'ez plays a role somewhat like Latin in parts of Europe. It's an older, respected language used in worship and scholarship, and it shaped the languages and writing that came later.

The script: one fidel, many languages

The writing system is known by several names: the fidel, the Ge'ez script, or Ethiopic (the name used in computer standards like Unicode). It is written left to right.

Historians generally describe the script as starting out with consonant letters only, with vowel markings added in ancient times, by around the 4th century CE. That change turned it into an abugida.

What's an abugida?

In an abugida, each character stands for a consonant plus a vowel. The base letter shows the consonant, and small changes to its shape show the vowel. In Amharic, that gives each letter family seven forms, like በ ቡ ቢ ባ ቤ ብ ቦ (be, bu, bi, ba, bé, bə, bo). We explain the pattern in why the fidel is easier than it looks and lay out the grid in our Amharic alphabet chart guide.

Today the fidel is used to write several languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea, including Amharic, Tigrinya and Tigre, as well as Ge'ez itself and a number of other languages in the region.

Amharic and the fidel

Amharic is the most widely spoken of the languages written in the fidel and serves as the working language of Ethiopia's federal government. It's the language most diaspora families mean when they say "the fidel".

Amharic uses the inherited Ge'ez letters plus some families added for sounds Ge'ez didn't have, such as ሸ (she), ቸ (che), ኘ (nye), ጀ (je) and ዠ (zhe). It also keeps several "sound twins", letters that once stood for different sounds but are pronounced the same in modern Amharic, like ሀ ሐ ኀ. More on those in how many letters are in the Amharic alphabet.

Tigrinya and the fidel

Tigrinya is spoken widely in Eritrea and in Ethiopia's Tigray region, and by many diaspora families. It uses the same script, with some important differences:

We're describing general patterns here. If Tigrinya is your family's language, a fluent Tigrinya speaker or teacher is the best guide to the details.

Does it matter which one my child learns first?

For young children, the most important thing is learning the shapes and the seven-vowel pattern. That foundation transfers well between Amharic and Tigrinya. A few practical suggestions:

Respecting every language

Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Ge'ez and the other languages written in the fidel each carry their own history, literature and identity. Sharing a script doesn't make them the same language, and every family's language deserves to be celebrated on its own terms.

Will Fidel Friends teach Tigrinya?

Right now our episodes teach the fidel through Amharic. Many Eritrean and Tigrinya-speaking families are looking for resources like this too, and we may add Tigrinya content in the future. In the meantime, the letter shapes and seven-sound pattern in our letter family videos are a helpful start for any fidel learner.
