First Amharic Words for Toddlers: 35+ Easy Words to Start With
Toddlers learn words by hearing them again and again in everyday moments. That makes the first two or three years a wonderful time to start Amharic at home. This list of first Amharic words for toddlers focuses on the things little ones see, eat, touch and love every day: family, food, greetings, animals and their own bodies.
A quick note on pronunciation: the English spellings below are simple guides, not a formal system. If you have relatives who speak Amharic, let your child hear the words from them too.
First Amharic words: family
Family words are usually a baby's first words in any language, and they're the most rewarding to hear.
| English | Amharic | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| Mom / Mommy | እማ / እማዬ | i-ma / i-ma-yé |
| Dad / Daddy | አባ / አባዬ | a-ba / a-ba-yé |
| Brother | ወንድም | wen-dim |
| Sister | እህት | i-hit |
| Baby | ሕፃን | hi-tsan |
Many families also have their own special words for grandparents. Use whatever your family says. Those personal names matter more than any list.
Food and drink words
Mealtimes happen several times a day, so they're the easiest place to practise.
| English | Amharic | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| Injera | እንጀራ | in-je-ra |
| Water | ውሃ | wu-ha |
| Milk | ወተት | we-tet |
| Bread | ዳቦ | da-bo |
| Banana | ሙዝ | muz |
| Coffee (for grown-ups!) | ቡና | bu-na |
Try naming each food as you put it on the plate, and asking "ውሃ?" when you offer a drink. Toddlers quickly learn that saying the word gets results.
Greetings and polite words
| English | Amharic | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| Hello / peace | ሰላም | se-lam |
| Okay / yes, sure | እሺ | i-shi |
| Yes | አዎ | a-wo |
| Thank you | አመሰግናለሁ | a-me-se-gi-na-le-hu |
| Well done! / clever! | ጎበዝ | go-bez |
| Bye | ቻው | chaw |
አመሰግናለሁ is long for a toddler, so don't worry if it comes out as "ame-ame" for a while. Praise the try. And say ጎበዝ! often. It's the word your child will love hearing most.
Animal words
Animals are a toddler favourite, especially with sounds and actions.
| English | Amharic | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| Sheep | በግ | beg |
| Cat | ድመት | di-met |
| Dog | ውሻ | wu-sha |
| Cow | ላም | lam |
| Chicken | ዶሮ | do-ro |
| Horse | ፈረስ | fe-res |
| Lion | አንበሳ | an-be-sa |
Play "what does the ላም say?" with picture books or toy animals. Several of these are also picture words in our letter episodes, like በግ for the በ family.
Body words
| English | Amharic | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| Eye | አይን | a-yin |
| Ear | ጆሮ | jo-ro |
| Nose | አፍንጫ | a-fin-cha |
| Mouth | አፍ | af |
| Hand | እጅ | ij |
| Foot / leg | እግር | i-gir |
| Hair | ፀጉር | tse-gur |
Bath time and getting dressed are perfect for body words: "Wash your እጅ!", "Where's your አፍንጫ?"
A few describing words
- ትልቅ (tilik): big
- ትንሽ (tinish): small, a little
- ቆንጆ (konjo): beautiful, lovely
- ጣፋጭ (tafach): sweet, tasty
Pair them with words your child already knows: "ትልቅ አንበሳ!" (big lion!).
How to teach first words without "lessons"
- Name things as they happen. Say the Amharic word at the moment your child sees, touches or wants the thing.
- Repeat, repeat, repeat. Toddlers often need to hear a word many times before they say it. That's normal.
- Pick a small set. Choose five words for this week, then add five more. Thirty-five words over a couple of months is a great pace.
- Use both languages freely. Mixing English and Amharic in one sentence is normal for bilingual kids. Our post on raising bilingual kids in the diaspora covers this.
- Celebrate every attempt. A half-word is still a word. ጎበዝ!
A day of first words
You don't need extra time to use these words. Here's how they fit into an ordinary day:
- Morning: "ሰላም!" when your child wakes up, then ወተት or ውሃ at breakfast.
- Getting dressed: name the body parts as arms and legs go into sleeves: እጅ, እግር.
- Outside: point out any ውሻ or ድመት you see on a walk.
- Mealtime: name the food, and model አመሰግናለሁ when someone serves you.
- Bath time: play "touch your አፍንጫ, touch your ጆሮ".
- Bedtime: "ቻው" to the toys, and a big "ጎበዝ" for a good day.
If you're not fluent yourself, learn the words with your child. Hearing a parent try, laugh and keep going teaches something valuable too.
From words to letters
Once your toddler knows a handful of words, the fidel becomes much more meaningful. When they meet በ, they already know በግ. When they meet ዶ, they know ዶሮ. Around age three or four, many children enjoy starting the alphabet. Begin with the ሀ family, browse all letter families, or print the free fidel chart. Next, try counting to ten in Amharic.
